Core content matrix
Who this template is for and what it covers
This template is for initial teacher education (ITE) providers and accreditation panels (panels) to use along with the Accreditation of initial teacher education programs in Australia: Guidelines (Guidelines).
Program applications for accreditation must include this completed template.
The Core content matrix helps providers:
- map evidence against each core content area in line with National Program Standard 2.2.
- show where to find the evidence relevant to each core content area in the application
- address all core content areas in their application.
The Core content matrix helps panels:
- find the evidence relevant to each core content area, so they can decide whether the application addresses each core content area.
Providers and panels use the Core content matrix differently depending on whether it is for Stage one or Stage two accreditation.

How to complete this template
Providers should list up to 2 examples of where the core content is taught, practised and where the learning outcomes are assessed. Evidence can include:
For each core content area taught:
• Unit outlines, including unit content and learning outcomes or objectives
- Reading lists
- Learning activities
For each core content area practised:
• Learning exercises and activities
For each core content area assessed:
• Assessment tasks, including assessment criteria
- Critical tasks, including assessment criteria.
For core content 4 (responsive teaching): there is no specified learning outcome, rather it has 4 focus areas, with 14 indicators. Providers should include assessments of the 4 focus areas that holistically address the indicators and can develop their own learning outcomes for this area.
Panels need to check that tasks assess the underpinning knowledge and content of the focus areas.
Also, providers should include a short summary of up to 2 sentences when using any academic journals and research as evidence, within Template 6.
